Meaning of a PurposeFULL Professional:
“Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.” – Simon Sinek, author
The famous Simon Sinek says “your WHY is a compass that provides the direction and focus for you to live your life with purpose, on purpose”.
In fact, living your life on purpose is one of his rules. Along with being a courageous leader. (Source: Evan Carmichael, YouTube)
- How interesting is it that he has paired the two?
But I agree; knowing your WHY is extremely important to help you live a happy life, feel fulfilled at work, and build an existence with purpose.
In this blog, I want to outline what living with purpose looks like and how you can become a “purpose-full professional”.
And that begs the question: How “purpose full” are you?
Knowing your WHY: Becoming a PurposeFULL Professional
Have you ever wondered why there is so much hype around knowing your WHY? Knowing your WHY has the potential to have a huge ripple effect on your entire life – personally and professionally.
When you are clear about why you do what you do and what your bigger purpose looks like, it allows you to be more transparent about what you truly desire.
I started my business – Discovery Within – because I wanted to have freedom of choice to work when I wanted, with whom I wanted, and wherever I wanted. It gave me the time to be present during the school holidays after my husband passed away from cancer, and I wanted to fully be there for my young children.
Working in the pharmaceutical industry wasn’t going to allow me to do that. My business gave me more flexibility; it allowed me to leverage my time, and I found something I really loved doing.
Since starting my business I have continued on the personal and professional development path and, in fact, I was able to set up my business after I studied coaching and becoming a member of the International Coaching Federation.
I’ve always been interested in neuroplasticity and how we can change to be more and do more if we have a big enough WHY. Being surrounded by like-minded people who want to reach the next level is always a great incentive.
Getting clear about your WHY will help you understand and acknowledge what you really want personally and professionally, which will help you become the best you can be in life and the best leader of yourself, first.
You will also become a better person, that is, partner, parent, friend and colleague. Investing in your own personal development allows you to enhance the relationships you have.
What is a PurposeFULL Professional?
The PurposeFULL Professional idea is about moving towards a purposeful life, professionally and personally, while moving away from feeling powerless.
Many busy professionals feel powerless to change their life or career. They are on autopilot, running on a treadmill, and quickly running out of steam.
I recently conducted a survey asking professionals how they felt about their job, career, and life.
The responses were overwhelming, with many people saying:
- They felt powerless and lost.
- They were being pulled in all directions.
- The workload was too much or they had too many projects.
- They were stressed by “needy customers”.
- They were working with unreasonable deadlines.
- They were stressed by stakeholders changing requirements.
- They had a lack of time.
- There was a lack of professional support.
“Nothing changes, until you change.” – Julian Lennon, musician and philanthropist
I could empathise with the responses because it used to be me too. But until I changed, nothing else would.
I sought help – and that’s the key.
For many years now, I’ve explored personal development, growth, and a success-oriented mindset to live life fully with no regrets. Life is short and you never know what’s around the corner. I lost my husband to cancer when he was 44 years old. After releasing the grief I felt, I reassessed my own life and took a different path to establish my coaching business.
I didn’t want to continue doing work that didn’t serve my purpose anymore.
And you shouldn’t have to either.
I now help busy professionals who feel pulled in all directions to get back on track, feel in control again, and reconnect with what matters most – positively impacting their lives and those around them.
I feel “purpose-FULL” for doing it.
How to feel more “purpose-FULL” in your professional and personal life
You can be more, do more, and give more. You just have to be courageous and take the first step.
But you can’t do that if you feel stressed and overwhelmed, so try these tips to feel more at ease:
1. Stay calm and breathe: If you are feeling completely stressed and overwhelmed, it will be difficult to assess your situation. So take a seat, relax for a moment and take a few deep breaths.
I’ve outlined this more in my “3 Steps to Reduce Stress” eBook.
2. Positive affirmations: Sitting still, give yourself a dose of positive affirmation and say to yourself: “I’ve got this”. Change the voice in your head and start telling yourself what you want.
3. Get up and move: When you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, it’s important to change your state by moving. Get up, jump up and down, make a power move, shake your body, or dance. You can change your emotional state by changing your physical state.
